Minister of Health Announces Legislative Change to Improve Access to Oral Care The British Columbia Dental Hygienists Association is pleased to announce that the Hon. Mike de Jong, Minister of Health, has approved changes to the section of the dental hygiene legislation commonly known as the “365 Day Rule”. Minister de Jong shared the good news with the BCDHA members in attendance at the Annual General Meeting held on March 31, 2012. Beginning July 3, 2012, dental hygienists who meet additional education and experience requirements, as specified in the bylaws of the College of Dental Hygienists of BC, will be able to apply for a category of registration with the College of Dental Hygienists of BC that will allow them to practice exempt from the “365 day rule”, regardless of their practice setting. BCDHA and the College of Dental Hygienists will be releasing additional information in the near future regarding these new legislative changes. These changes will increase public access to dental hygienists and the range of services they can provide. BCDHA is committed to advocating on behalf of the dental hygiene profession in British Columbia. While we recognize that these amendments do not encompass all of the changes needed to bring B.C.’s dental hygiene legislation in line with other provinces, we believe this is an important first step towards negotiating further legislative changes with the B.C. Ministry of Health. We look forward to talking to BCDHA members about this new era in professional regulation of dental hygiene in British Columbia.
